Healthcare is a primary human right vital for the well-being and dignity of all. The United Nations' third Sustainable Development Goal emphasizes 'Good Health and Well-Being' for all. However, structural inequalities still harm specific communities, for instance, the transgender communities around the world.
In India, despite improvements in healthcare, those from the transgender community face significant barriers due to social discrimination. They also tend to be at a high risk for mental illness due to factors like harassment, violence, limited avenues to earn livelihoods, and a general lack of opportunities. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, in 2016, the suicide rate was 31% in the transgender community in India, with 50% having attempted suicide before the age of twenty.
Project RIGHT (Real Inclusion in Gender Health Treatment) aims to address this issue by providing health and wellbeing services and creating a safe space for the transgender community in Sitapur, Delhi.
Founded in October 2023, Project RIGHT is partnered with Mitr Trust, an NGO based in Sitapur, New Delhi, India. The project focuses on providing fundamental health and mental wellness services to members of the trans community through regular health camps, STI checkups, and mental well-being workshops. Additionally, through its podcast series, Project RIGHT aims to create awareness amongst India’s youth on the socio-economic discrimination faced by the trans community in the country.
